“You don’t love me yet”—Like a Knife began as a sensual cry of frustration, a realization that obsession (especially in young love) feeds loneliness. Over the thousands of times I played the song live, it became more of a battle cry, “I feel you will every time you call,” I’d sing to unanswered job applications, moments of quiet in unhealthy living conditions, the last bit of food in my pantry before payday. As a recorded track, it’s a sonic celebration of making it through—with lifting harmonies and a driving rhythm section.
